Carbon offsetting is a practice designed to neutralize or compensate for the emission of carbon dioxide (CO2) and other greenhouse gases (GHGs) into the atmosphere, which are primary contributors to climate change and global warming. This is achieved through the funding of projects that are designed to reduce future emissions or remove CO2 from the atmosphere.
These projects can vary widely and might include:
- Renewable Energy Projects: Investments in solar, wind, hydroelectric, and biomass energy projects that generate clean, renewable energy and reduce reliance on fossil fuels.
- Reforestation and Afforestation: Planting trees in areas where forests have been cut down (reforestation) or in areas where there were no forests previously (afforestation). Trees absorb CO2 from the atmosphere as they grow, sequestering carbon and effectively offsetting emissions.
- Energy Efficiency Projects: Supporting advancements in energy efficiency in industries, buildings, and transportation to reduce overall emissions.
- Methane Capture: Capturing methane emissions from landfills, agricultural practices, or waste treatment facilities. Methane is a potent greenhouse gas, and its capture and destruction or use as a fuel source can significantly reduce GHG emissions.
